BSNL aims to spread high speed internet access through high speed Internet connectivity across University campuses, Schools, Colleges, Hospitals, Public places, Post Offices Government offices, Parks, Gram Panchayats, health centres, and Tourist Places & heritage sites of India bringing Internet connectivity for one and all through the deployment of Wi Fi Network.

Wi- Fi yet another type of high speed Broadband access technology which enables Citizens to access very Affordable, Anywhere & Anytime, high speed broadband services while on the move thus enabling them to become Netizens.

BSNL started Wi-Fi services in Feb’15 by launching first Wi-Fi Hotspot zone at Dashashwamedh Ghat & Shitala Ghat of Varanasi. Varanasi has been selected as the first city to create Wi-Fi zone in view of the “Mission Varanasi” of Hon’ble Prime Minister. Subsequently, additional ghats of Varanasi have been provided with Wi-Fi Services.

Wi-Fi Hotspots were established at Hyderabad, around the Hussain Sagar Lake and extended to 80 Important Tourist Places like TajMahal Agra , like Sarnath, Konark Temple, Brihadeshwar Temple Thanjavur, Hampi Karnataka, Khajuraho M.P, and Jagannath Temple Puri and so on.

BSNL to penetrate the WiFi Hotspots across the country has employed several projects described as below:

  1. BSNL, in Public Private Partnership with number System Integrators (like M/s QuadGen, M/s Trimax and M/s GOIP), has built a high quality public Wi-Fi infrastructure and commissioned around 7800 Hotspots across the country. This is based on Revenue share mechanism.

  2. BSNL has also deployed MDO( Mobile Data Offload) solution on Pan-India basis by establishing a Core Wi Fi Network through M/s L & ( South & West Zones) and M/s HFCL ( North & East Zones) After off-loading of data traffic from mobile to Wi-Fi hot spot, mobile users continue to consume their mobile data plan but for accessing internet they are automatically connected through high capacity Bandwidth provided to Wi-Fi hot spot. Hence, Wi-Fi offload solution of BSNL would enable a much better experience to mobile users for accessing internet through their mobile devices. This MDO Experience would enable a saving on precious spectrum and a much better experience to mobile users for accessing internet at much high speeds through their mobile devices. Against this project, BSNL has set up about 5000 Hotspots.

  3. BSNL has also entered into an agreement with USOF / DOT for setting up 25,000 Public Wi Fi Hotspots at BSNL Telephone Exchanges in rural areas using BSNL Fiber network for providing the Internet services over Wi Fi Network to all users. Under this agreement, BSNL is setting up one Access Point (AP) for each Wi Fi Hotspots using its own bandwidth of 2 Mbps with a download of 4 Gb per device per month. Against this project, BSNL has set up about 1500 Wi Fi Hotspots. The fund support will be provided by USOF to promote the internet connectivity in rural areas. As of now, around 1500 Exchanges have been provided with Wi Fi.
Thus, BSNL has already set up about 14000 Public Wi-Fi Hotspots over more than 3500 locations with International Standards , Speed, Scalability & Security with Quality of Service connectivity and better Quality of Experience at each Hotspot with Interference free operation at speeds of 2mbps to 20mbps for users. All the above Public Wi Fi Hotspots are Centrally Manageable, Monitorable & Maintainable Pan India Carrier Grade Wi-Fi network with higher availability.

Access of internet from Wi-fi hot spots by the visitor is in simple steps. Visitor can latch on the BSNL wi-fi network through their mobile devices. SMS will be sent with user Id and password to the registered mobile number. The user can access the wi-fi services immediately at affordable tariff plans.
